Quá khứ đơn mô tả hành động đã xảy ra, trong khi câu điều kiện hỗn hợp dùng quá khứ hoàn thành hoặc quá khứ đơn kết hợp với would/ would have để liên kết thời gian khác nhau.
Thì quá khứ đơn diễn tả hành động đã xảy ra và kết thúc hoàn toàn trong quá khứ. Cấu trúc thường dùng động từ thêm đuôi -ed hoặc biến đổi theo bảng bất quy tắc, đi kèm từ chỉ thời gian xác định như yesterday, ago, last week. Khi tạo câu phủ định và nghi vấn với động từ thường, ta mượn trợ động từ did và giữ nguyên động từ chính.
