Cách dùng
Nói về kết quả trái với mong đợi: dùng although / though / even though + mệnh đề (even though nhấn mạnh hơn).
Although he studied a lot, he felt nervous.
Dù học nhiều, cậu ấy vẫn thấy lo.
Even though the bag was heavy, Anna carried it home.
Dù túi rất nặng, Anna vẫn xách về nhà.
Dùng despite / in spite of trước danh từ, cụm danh từ hoặc V-ing.

So sánh hai sự việc đối lập bằng while / whereas.

Dùng however (+ dấu phẩy) để nối hai câu có ý trái ngược; though có thể đứng cuối câu.

Because/since nêu nguyên nhân hợp lý, còn although nêu điều trái với mong đợi. So sánh: Because it rained, we stayed home. / Although it rained, we went out.
But nối hai mệnh đề ở giữa câu, còn although mở đầu mệnh đề phụ và không dùng cùng but trong một câu.
